The Mocean wave energy converter (WEC) is a hinged raft – two bodies connected by a hinge. Wave forces cause relative motion between the bodies about the hinge. In a full scale device, the hinge would contain a power-take-off (PTO) system, which converts the mechanical rotation into electricity. The hinge design is important in the full-scale machine, but also is critical to any scale models that we build. The picture above is of the hinge of the 1/50th scale model that we built for the Wave Energy Prize.
November was one hell of a month (and I mean that in the best possible way).
We had to finish, test, and ship our 50th scale model for the Wave Energy Prize. We only finished it completely, two days before it had to be shipped, and there were moments when we worried whether it would be finished at all. It was held up in US Customs (coming from the UK) because, understandably, they didn't know what it was. But fortunately, we had build it a contingency shipping day for that, so it arrived at the Stevens Institute of Technology (where we will be testing) the morning of November 23, the deadline. Whew...
