We are absolutely thrilled to be one of the 8 successful applicants (out of 37) in the Wave Energy Scotland - Novel WEC funding call. We will partner with The University of Edinburgh, and will begin the one year project in early 2016. It is an amazing opportunity!
The project will consist of 4 activity streams:
The award means that we can start a business. It's huge. Cameron and Chris will set up offices in Edinburgh, hopefully near the University. We will have work to sustain ourselves for one year, and in the mean time we will look for other projects and build our business. It also means that if we successfully make it past the second round of the Wave Energy Prize, we will be able to continue on in the Prize with the 1/20th scale model build and testing.
Timing is everything. Cameron and Chris have been working very hard over the past 10 months, but we have also be subject to fortuitous opportunities. After Pelamis went into administration, Chris took some contract work with the University and his desk was in Cameron's office. Cameron had come up with interesting ideas for WECs through the course of his PhD, and as a student he had the freedom to pursue them. Sharing a mutual interests in developing a WEC and a company, Chris and Cameron teamed up.
Then there was the Wave Energy Prize and Wave Energy Scotland. Both have been fantastic opportunities. They gave us clear objectives, allowed us to test our concept against other ideas, gave us legitimacy, and provided the funding to start a company.
Cameron is a big fan of TEDTalks, and although we have a ways to go before we'll consider ourselves a successful company, this one keeps coming to mind:
The Wave Energy Scotland project will be extremely exciting and fun, and we're looking forward to getting started!
